The other thing is TLOU1 used motion capture, but not facial performance capture. So now those slight exaggerations would stand out against the actual, real people rendered 1:1 realistically, meaning they had to go back and tweak the TLOU1 designs to remove the most obvious exaggerations and increase the level of realism. Not significantly - it was still going for a "photo-realistic" look - but actual photorealism wasn't possible at the time, so everything is just slightly exaggerated so expressions and emotions read properly while also having a distinct, recognizable face, all within the confines of the capabilities of the PS3.įor TLOU2, they actually went for actual photorealism, to the point where many new characters (Dina, as one example) are, in fact, 1:1 scans of real people (or amalgams - Abby's face is a scan of one person, her body is a different person). She was stylized because of those limits.
